La Historia de la guerra de Granada (1610), cronica dividida en tres libros, fue publicada por Luis Tribaldos de Toledo tras circular largo tiempo en manuscritos. La Historia narra el origen de la guerra y su desarrollo, analiza las relaciones entre el poder civil y el militar y la aristocracia, y defiende casi siempre al mundo islamico. El estilo recuerda a historiadores latinos como Salustio y Tacito, en la introduccion de discursos, retratos y reflexiones morales y en la sobriedad narrativa. Hurtado de Mendoza fue guerrero, humanista, diplomatico y un poeta celebre en Europa. Escribio este libro al final de su vida. Habia regresado a Granada, desterrado, en medio de un ambiente hostil.
