Bullying Prevention for Principals is a research based, school-wide
bullying prevention program for elementary and middle school. It is
written specifically from the principal's point of view and
provides the critical information and help needed to develop a
comprehensive and effective bullying prevention program. It
includes best practices, best methods and best materials and covers
such broad topics as the big prevention picture, elements of a
quality program, implementation models and classroom reinforcement.
Care has been taken to provide information that can be used by
administrators directly. The kinds of questions that it was assumed
principals would be confronted with were: What do I need to know?
What should the total program look like? What specific materials
and resources should be used? Have the concepts and practices been
successful in other schools? What steps should be taken first? How
should the program be implemented? These questions and many others
like them were taken into consideration as this program was being
developed. Some of the important topics covered in detail include
district policy, school rules, culture development, prevention and
intervention training, parent and student involvement the handling
of bullying complaints, help for victims and help for bullies. The
appendix contains a great many resources, an extensive
bibliography, and complete surveys that can be used directly to
obtain valuable insight and feedback from students, parents,
faculty and staff. The author served as principal for twenty-three
years at the high school, middle school and elementary levels.
Having worked in all three areas, he understands the issues facing
principals today, as well as the critical role that administrators
play in resolving these problems. He is also acutely aware of the
time constraints, pressures, and heavy responsibilities that school
principals are under. This book is based on research dealing with
bullying and harassment issues by noted authors and practitioners.
It is an effort to try to assist principals with the task of
developing a comprehensive and effective bullying prevention
program for their school, while still attending to all of the
demands pressed upon them each day. It is expected that principals
will find the book especially helpful because it provides in one
place the concentrated information essential for putting together a
quality total bullying prevention program for their school and it
does so by looking at the whole subject specifically from the
principal's perspective. It is the author's sincere hope that, as a
result, vulnerable children can be spared the senseless grief and
danger that bullying and harassment creates.
