Napoleon's annexation of Tuscany in 1808 subjected the people to
the will of a far-off power and threatened their traditional system
of values with a military draft, heavy taxation and attacks on the
institutions and wealth of the local church, provoking violent
reactions and rebellions. This book sheds light for the first time
on the failed attempt to impose on Tuscany a Napoleonic monarchical
administration with a professional bureaucracy under the leadership
of collaborating local elites. Italian text.
