This is the second novel from Emily Barr, experienced travel writer
and author of Backpack. Set in England and Australia, it tells the
story of Daisy, who after something terrible happens fakes her own
suicide and embarks on a journey that she hopes will bring her a
new life, away from England and everything that reminds her of it.
Daisy travels through Asia, adopting a baby boy called Red along
the way, and finally, in the Australian Outback, meets Tony and
finds a new beginning. But ten years later her English best friend
Sophie turns up out of the blue and recognizes her straight away.
Desperate to avoid detection, Daisy denies ever meeting Sophie
before. But Sophie is convinced that Daisy is the best friend who
had supposedly committed suicide all those years ago. When Sophie
returns home to England and her journalist boyfriend she explains
that Daisy is alive, well and living in Australia. Although at
first he isn't particularly convinced, Lawrence knows that if
Sophie is right then this could be the story to set his career
alight. If, that is, he is the one to bring her home.... This is an
ingenious and eminently readable story that twists and turns
between friends and enemies, as the distance between the two
countries that connect them shrinks and shrinks. (Kirkus UK)
At eighteen, your closest friend commits suicide. At twenty-nine,
you're backpacking in the Australian outback when you see her. She
has a husband. She has a ten-year-old son. She has a baby on the
way. She claims to be someone else. But you'd recognise her
anywhere. Back in England you tell your journalist boyfriend. While
he never knew her, he always knew of her - her name is Daisy Fraser
and she was awaiting trial over the deaths of four people when she
jumped off the Severn Bridge. He thinks: This could be the scoop of
the century. He says: Happy Christmas - I'm taking you to Australia
to find Daisy.
