a modern and accessible style and is relevant to modern day
enthusiasts restoring or constructing replica or miniature steam
locomotives. The book has a good selection of drawings and
photographs depicting locomotives of the period from 1804-1879,
which complement the historic text. At the time this book was
written by two of the leading engineering academics, the steam
locomotive was regarded as one of the finest examples of advanced
engineering and its drivers and firemen were at the forefront of
skilled working people.
