Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (DVD)

This is the magical original screen version of Roald Dahl's now-classic children's book, that tells of eccentric candy maker Willie Wonka (Gene Wilder), who turns out a special batch of his Wonka Bars; five (and only five) of which contain a golden ticket that will allow their holders a visit to the chocolate factory... as well as assure them of a lifetime supply of chocolate! Four of the tickets fall in the hands of real spoiled-brat-kids; while the fifth and last one is discovered by Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) - a poor boy who lives in a tiny house with his widowed mother and four bed-ridden grandparents.

As with most of Dahl's works, the story is simple enough for children of all ages to follow; and the Oscar-nominated musical score - by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricuse - is a delight in itself!

While it is no secret that Roald Dahl originally wanted Spike Milligan for the role of Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder is a better-than-adequate substitute! Roy Kinner is also very good as Mr Salt - father of Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole); one of the "bratty" kids.

Twenty-five years after this merry movie charmed audiences with a colourful mix of song, humour and life lessons, the Candy Man still wields magic, expecially now in a vibrant new print with a soundtrack in true stereo.

From the classic Roald Dahl story comes a lip-smacking delight with jolly tunes, among them The Candy Man and Pure Imagination. With a golden ticket young Charlie Bucket wins a tour of the factory of wily mogul Wonka (Gene Wilder) and run by his Oompa-Loompa crew. There Charlie, his Grandpa Joe and others discover a kind heart is a finer possession than a sweet tooth.
