Ms. Hodgson did not attempt to write an encyclopedic handbook which
should detail salient facts about every English writer in whom the
most relentless searcher could detect a speck of mysticism; but she
tried to indicate the particular qualities, the racial aroma of
English mysticism, in its different aspects, as shown by men and
women of widely separated times and dissimilar temperament and
environment. Contents: beginnings of English mysticism; English
mystics of the Middle Ages; mystic way in the Middle Ages; English
mystics of the 17th century; Anglo-Catholic mystics and others;
nature mystics; Tractarians and after.
