This book's dedication - 'To those who serve in secret' - might
easily apply to the father and son team who have written it, under
the pseudonym Gordon Kent. Like their first novel, Night Trap, this
one features the naval intelligence officer, Alan Craik, in an
exciting adventure that crosses continents. The book opens in 1994
with the shooting down of the airliner carrying the leaders of both
Rwanda and Burundi. The Tutsi people of the former nation are
blamed for the atrocity, even though a mixture of white mercenaries
and Hutus carried out the attack, and the incident sparks genocide.
Two years later, after a daring mission to close down a house of
torture in Bosnia, Alan Craik returns to the USA and enjoys dinner
with his wife and closest friends. They cannot possibly know it
yet, but their paths will cross in the course of their duties even
though their individual missions are so diverse. Harry O'Neill is a
CIA agent assigned to Africa to monitor the situation, but his life
becomes endangered when he finds out too much about the 1994
assassination. Mike Dukas is a military policeman, bored in his
work, who requests a transfer to the war crimes unit in Bosnia.
Rose Siciliano, Craik's wife, is the launch officer for the
Peacemaker project; she believes that it is a communications
satellite but the top brass are hiding the facts. The authors have
a wealth of experience in naval intelligence and aircraft, and they
clearly love the technical and human aspects of the job, while
maintaining a healthy disdain for the faceless people who control
the destiny of the frontline staff. There is some jargon but it is
not impenetrable to civilians, although some prior knowledge of
what the different types of ships and military aircraft look like
would certainly increase one's appreciation. As for the Peacemaker
itself, it all sounds like something out of a Bond film, but it is
depressingly plausible in today's world. This is an entertaining,
sobering thriller with a strong cast of characters. (Kirkus UK)
From the acclaimed author of Night Trap, the second exhilarating
tale of modern espionage and military adventure featuring US Navy
intelligence officer Alan Craik. US Navy Intelligence officer Alan
Craik is plunged into adventures on land, at sea and in the air in
this action-packed new tale of betrayal, conspiracy and modern
espionage - written with the authority that comes from personal
experience. Alan Craik is back from sea duty and rapidly tiring of
life behind a Pentagon desk when he learns that his best friend, a
CIA agent, has been kidnapped in central Africa - just as Rwanda is
about to be engulfed in violence. Before long, Alan flies out to
join the US fleet off the African coast, ready to launch a bold
rescue mission. But events spiral wildly out of control, and soon
he and his wounded friend find themselves stranded in the middle of
the continent with war raging all around.
