Author of the magnificent The Tin Drum, winner of this year's Nobel
Prize for Literature, Grass has shown the justice of the Swedish
decision in producing My Century. It's an unusual book, a form of
docu-fiction, with various voices, including his own, telling a
tale about a single year of the 20th century. It displays all its
author's political energy, and his presence at many of the
important events. But the best passages are often those which are
invented: the stories of the inventors of the German spiked helmet
and the steel helmet, for instance. There are fine evocations of
World War II, the issues of divided Germany and the process of
reunification (on which Grass had unusual views, here explained).
The book illustrates the invention of the novelist, the power of
the satirist, and the power of the historian. Of course it helps to
know a little of German history, literature and politics. But this
is one of the finest books on the events, the shames and the moral
horrors of the century I have read. Reviewed by Malcolm Bradbury
(Kirkus UK)
A collection of one hundred inter-linked stories celebrating the
twentieth century, by Germany's most eminent contemporary writer.
As the sequence of stories unfolds, a lively and rich picture
emerges, an historical portrait of our century in all its grandeur
and in all its horror.
