This study examines the various institutions, legal devices and
policies by which the Roman Empire secured a regular supply of
grain to the army and the city of Rome. Palomera shows that
although overseen centrally by the annona these measures differed
fundamentally from province to province from the Alimenta in Italy,
to fiscal concessions to coloni in North Africa, and the more
active political participation and control exercised by the
city-states of the Greek speaking east. Spanish text.
