Charlie Thornton, bored with the routines of his middle-class
London home life, embarks on an experiment to raise a smile from
Stacey, the truculent checkout girl at the local supermarket. His
whimsy quickly turns to obsession and he leaves to chase his dream.
This sudden departure plunges his family - especially his wife Judy
- into turmoil, and their buried fears and secrets rise to the
surface. Stacey too inhabits a miserable world. She is grossly
overweight, and perfectly conscious of the looks and whispers she
attracts. To change the way the Savamart staff and customers see
her forever, she needs to find #7900, but how? This, Jane Asher's
third novel, looks at relationships and how they are affected by
time, lust, obsession and loss. The narrative consists of diary
entries and letters from each of the main characters, enabling the
reader to see the story from all points of view. The dialogue is
occasionally strained and there are a few rather predictable
secrets, but the plot is inventive and some of the twists are truly
surprising. This book should be read for the hilarious revelation
of Judy Thornton's seedy habit alone, although the wittily observed
characters and the genuine feelings of pathos evoked by the
understated finale are even more rewarding. (Kirkus UK)
