The vision from Seville for the 21st century takes into account the
most current problems in our world such as population growth,
increasing demands for resources and economic and cultural
globalization. In order to face these worldwide developments, good
practice examples are needed to illustrate the realization of ideas
towards sustainable development. Biosphere reserves are model
regions that can provide such examples. Education plays a key role
in the process of shaping a sustainable future. The transfer of
knowledge, attitude and the presentation of alternative lifestyles
in regards to social, economic and ecological aspects are crucial
components in order to meet this goal. This interdisciplinary and
multidimensional approach of education for sustainable development
is not only an opportunity for biosphere reserves to meet its
objectives, but an important task.
