In December 1970, eight months after The Beatles officially split
up, Lennon was interviewed at length by Rolling Stone editor
Wenner, to publicize his incendiary first solo album: a pivotal
moment in his career. This updated transcript includes the more
sensitive material exised from the first edition, and it's not hard
to guess which bits they are. Lennon here is neither the hippy nor
the politicized firebrand of popular cliche, but a man not getting
too much sympathetic press gleefully seizing the opportunity to
talk freely about himself, past and present. As Yoko is at his
side, there is plenty of muddled theorizing from the pair, but this
is an unmistakably post-60s interview. The contradictions of
Lennon's earthy side meeting his new-found pacifism and embracing
of therapy are sometimes made uncomfortably plain. The nasal scouse
accent fills every word, but frequently these words will shock even
the most knowledgeable Lennonophile. His railings at Paul McCartney
are frighteningly bilious; his attacks on would-be Beatles manager
Lee Eastman (McCartney's fther-in-law) are simply anti-Semitic.
Though these are the words of an indulged and not yet reconstructed
icon, Lennon Remembers is fascinating reading, humanizing him in a
way that the previous edition could not. It should be required
reading for the fans who believe heroes, especially dead ones, are
above personal criticism. In fact, true heroes deserve nothing less
than this kind of record. (Kirkus UK)
Initially published on the twentieth anniversary of his death, this
candid book reveals new information on the breakup of the Beatles,
fellow musicians such as Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, Lennon's
attitudes towards revolution and drugs, and his relationship with
Yoko Ono. Featuring new introductions by Ono and Wenner, and
containing substantial material never before seen in print, Lennon
Remembers presents a compelling portrait of a complex musical
genius at the height of his career. Sometimes anguished and angry,
often tender and poignant, these interviews are indispensable to
understanding who John Lennon was and why his legacy continues to
resonate today.
