From acclaimed award-winning director Roman Polanski comes this very "talky" comedy drama featuring a brilliant cast of actors: Oscar winners Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and Oscar nominee John Reilly.
The movie is based on a stage play (Gods Of Carnage), and it's evident in that the whole movies takes place in one apartment during one afternoon. Two sets of parents are in discussion about their respective sons (the one bullied the other), but the well-mannered dialogue soon turns aggressive as both sets of parents lose their cool, with each other, with their partners, as alliances are built and quickly discarded.
Truth be told, the film is hilarious and the performances are insightfully brilliant, as these actors give a peek into how the upper middle class don't have the "perfect" lives we always seem to think they do. I was certainly cackling with delight, never knowing who to root for as all four characters get their chance to shine and be sympathetic, then do a 360 as they become verbose and "villainous".
Foster and Winslet are definitely the standout performers, but the movie as a whole is well worth seeing! Only complaint I would lodge is maybe the ending which comes too soon and unexpectedly. Still a "near"-masterpiece though! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
After two boys duke it out on a playground, the parents of the "victim" invite the parents of the "bully" over to work out their issues.
A polite discussion of childrearing soon escalates into verbal warfare, with all four parents revealing their true colors. None of them will escape the carnage.
Directed by Roman Polanski, Carnage stars Academy Award-winners Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz as husband and wife Nancy and Alan Cowan, opposite Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster and Academy Award-nominee John C. Reilly as Penelope and Michael Longstreet.
