would be distasteful to you, though none would more cheerfully

1853. CHAPTER I. It has come once more Three hundred and sixty-five
unseen messengers upon soundless wings, have, the latest of them
with frost, and snow, and blustering wind, brought to home, hearth
and heart, the genial season. Bar the doors and draw the blinds;
and let the flames from the huge log flash and flare to welcome its
approach. Bar the door oh, no ?fling it open wide, though the snow
flakes, driven by the sharp gusts from without, glitter for an
instant, then dissolve in the soft warm atmosphere, and fall like
dew on the floor. Wide open?that the cheering sound of wandering
Christmas minstrels, chiming their carols, may reach us, as we sit
reddening in the comfortable blaze. Wide open, that the sound of
village bells may float to our fireside. Wide open, that the beggar
and the outcast may, so they will, enter and welcome, for Christmas
Eve is come Come to troops of romping girls and boys, shiny-faced
and saucy; for the merry old Greybeard has, with frosty fingers,
written the magic word " Holiday " on the windows of Doctor Bogie's
"Establishment," and of the Misses Bluehose's " Seminary." Come to
comfortable Fathers and Mothers in comfortable parlors, who have
had Christmas candles lighted, and cakes made, and snap-dragons
manufactured, and no end ofdainties provided for a jolly children's
party, in which they themselves mean to be children...
