These memoirs cover a long life in socialist politics and the
academic world, from his travels in France and Nazi Germany as the
Second World War approached, through war service as an
Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Sergeant Major and army life in India.
Saville, with Edward Thompson, was involved in the crisis of the
British Communist Party in 1956 following Khrushchev's speech to
the 20th Congress of the Soviet Communist Party, and the
consequences of the Soviet invasion of Hungary. Working against
United States' Cold War politics, he even found that an MI5 agent
had been planted at his home in Hull. John Saville is former
Professor of Economic History at the University of Hull and was,
for many years, co-editor with Ralph Miliband of The Socialist
Register.
