The remarkable career of Jose Echegaray in science, politics and
letters during the latter half of the nineteenth century has
attracted the attention of students in each of these departments of
human activity. Indeed, the results of Echegaray has accomplished
in any one of these branches entitle him to a distinguished
position. To the student of letters, this fact is the more
interesting in that Echegaray's pronounced natural aptitude is for
science and mathematics. The factors that have contributed largely
to his success in the drama are unusual intellect, combined with
imagination and will power to work and to preserve. O Locura O
