Roth's last novel, a dazzling evocation of old Vienna, was
published in 1939, the year of his death, and ranks with The
Radetzky March as one of his finest works. Based on a historical
event, a visit by the Shah of Persia to Vienna in the mid-19th
century, it tells of the consequences of his gift of a magnificent
string of pearls to a prostitute whom he believed to be a countess.
Joseph Roth was undoubtedly one of the greatest writers working in
the German language in the 20th century. (Kirkus UK)
While visiting Vienna, the Shah of Persia falls for a beautiful
countess. The Austrian officials arrange for him to spend the night
with the "countess", but unbeknown to the Shah she is a prostitute
who merely resembles the countess. From this night follows a chain
of ruinous consequences.
