policies but as a temperament or disposition-one marked by openness
to complexity, willingness to acknowledge uncertainty, tolerance
for difference, and resistance to ruthlessness. In the face of
rising political fanaticism, he persuasively argues for the
continuing importance of this liberal ethos.
