1911 Crossing the ocean for a new life … Sisters Bridget and
Sally are leaving their home in Kerry to sail to New York to find
work. On the long sea journey they meet a young, orphaned
girl, Julia, who is travelling to live with her long-absent
brother. But in when the girls arrive in America Julia’s
brother is nowhere to be found! Sally and Bridget persuade their
cousin in New York to take Julia in. The girls slowly get used to
their strange new life and their jobs – Bridget is a lady’s
companion, Sally is a childminder, while Julia works in a factory.
They work hard, but also have fun exploring their adopted city. But
then something terrible happens – a false accusation threatens to
destroy their new life in America. How can three young girls alone
in the big city sort things out themselves? Â If they stick
together, speak up for themselves and stay brave, might things work
out in the city of dreams?
