The British Library is home to one of the world's greatest medieval
treasures. The Lindisfarne Gospels is an oustanding example of
Anglo-Saxon book painting. It was written and illuminated in the
early eighth century AD, perhaps by Bishop Eadfrith in the
Monastery of Lindisfarne, on an island off the coast of
Northumbria.
