October 1915 Esther Joanna Webb of Gnadenhutten, Ohio visits her
sister Frances in Eaton, Ohio. It is during that visit the Esther
meets the youthful farmer, John Ezra Creager, a sometime clerk in
the department store owned by her brother-in-law Warren Spring and
his brother Charles. This is their written courtship. John's
letters explain daily farming chores and his time attending a local
business college, convey his intense love for Esther, and reveal
concerns over the growing global conflict that draws the United
States into World War I. Esther's letters detail the more mundane
activities of a young lady living with her widowed mother during
the latter part of the Progressive Era, but also express her love
for the young man who will become her husband.
