This book deals with the territories on the border between Italy
and the Habsburg Empire, and later Yugoslavia, during the 19th and
the 20th centuries, placing this peripheral region in the center of
modern Italian and European history and in the wider sphere of the
continental history of nationalisms, totalitarianisms and
atrocities during the Second World War and the early Cold War
period, and treating the topic from the political, institutional,
diplomatic and cultural points of view, from Italian unification to
the breakdown of the former Yugoslavia.
