Life changing thriller! Even though getting pregnant as a teenager was an accident, Kate Evans has loved her daughter Becky ever since she was born. It was always just the two of them growing up, and Kate was determined to give Becky the life she never had. Now thriving as a young trainee investigative journalist, Becky has made her mum proud, and she and Kate are closer than ever. One night, a terrible accident happens, and Kate’s life is changed forever. She stumbles across a story that her daughter was investigating and with the support of her boyfriend Tim, starts to pursue it herself in an attempt to make some sense of the tragedy that has befallen her family. What she uncovers is bigger than Kate could have imagined and may hold the answers as to what has happened to her family. However, by getting involved, she might be putting herself in danger, as the secrets she discovers are secrets people will do anything to keep hidden. This was an interesting combination of an emotive family tale and a compelling mystery, that worked well together as a novel. The plot was original and well researched and flowed smoothly through to a dramatic climax and a neat conclusion. Kate was a likeable character and her devotion to her daughter and desperation to provide her with a better life despite being a single mother was quite emotionally powerful, as was her determination and courage to fight for the rights of those who she felt were being treated unfairly. Iris was also enjoyable as the motherly, self-deprecating old neighbour, although Tim the bus driver boyfriend was a little uninspiring. The first few chapters felt a bit rushed and some of the big moments that happened didn’t have a massive impact on me as a reader as all the characters were new to me. However, as the plot starts to come together it develops into a gripping story where you find yourself really rooting for Kate to get to the bottom of the dodgy dealings she uncovers. Without going into detail on what these sinister activities are, the idea is quite unique and not something I’ve come across in a mystery-type story before, which made the book quite refreshing. The relationship between Becky and Kate was central to this novel and, although touching, it unfortunately for me it didn’t quite pack the emotional punch that it felt like the author was aiming for, despite multiple flashbacks to Becky’s childhood interspersed throughout the story. I also felt that Kate’s behaviour following the accident was a little erratic and unexplainable at times and didn’t really make much sense within the context of her character. In conclusion, I did enjoy this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a different kind of mystery. The author is clearly a talented woman with a great understanding of human relationships, and I would be interested in reading more of her stories.
