Nadine Gordimer's The Pickup is an all-consuming and
thought-provoking novel of love within the social mixes of South
Africa. Poetical at its heart yet brutally honest on the surface,
Gordimer has once again proven herself to be mistress of the human
condition within the spiky political atmosphere that is South
Africa. When Julie Summers finds heself stranded after her car
breaks down, not only is she offered help in the form of a young
Arab man but she finds her life turning a different corner. Despite
or perhaps because of their differences in colour and social class
Julie and Abdu become lovers and a familiar item at the EL-AY cafe
where Julie can shed the stigma of her social class. But their
happiness is to be short lived as Abdu is discovered as an illegal
alien by the authorities and threatened with deportation. Gordimer
paints a stark picture of realities fo the place of Abdu's birth, a
place the Arab now finds himself and his new foreign wife
transported to. There, the poverty, disease and strict rules on
socially acceptable behaviour combine to make South Africa seem
like paradise. Ashamed of his birth place and convinced his wife
must be disgusted, Abdu searches for a country to take them in,
finally succeeding with America. But can their love alone be enough
to take Julie away from the new life she has found in her husband's
country? Nadine Gordimer's storytelling gift will leave you crying
out to know more as you reach the final words of this emotionally
charged novel of love fighting against the world. (Kirkus UK)
