When we first meet Coraline, the heroine of Neil Gaiman's creepy, quirky story, she's bored with her humdrum life. Her parents are always working and the odd characters who inhabit the rambling house into which she and her parents have just moved can't even get her name right. So it's not surprising she's delighted (at first) to discover a secret doorway into another parallel world located behind the dining-room door - a world that curiously mirrors her own and comes complete with parents who have all the time in the world for her.
But there's something 'different' about these 'other' parents...
Their fingernails are longer and sharper for a start...
They're taller and thinner, and curiously pale...
But what's really odd about them is they have no eyes - just large black buttons where eyes should be...
The 'other' family want Coraline to stay, and they long to give her a present - a pair of black button eyes all of her own...

A talking, haughtily superior cat, a bunch of rude red-eyed rats, a gaggle of lost souls, and something rather nasty in the cellar are all ingredients that add to the fun of this unsettling read. This is celebrated fantasy/horror writer Neil Gaiman's first foray into children's literature and Coraline is every bit as original as his adult fiction. While comparisons with Louis Carroll's Alice are inevitable, Gaiman's Coraline is a refreshingly sensible character, and her matter-of-fact handling of each grisly situation in which she finds herself adds to the surreal quality of the story. It's an engrossing read written in crystal clear prose, and is both amusing and sneakily disturbing.

Can Coraline outwit the twisted nature of her 'other' mother in time to save her parents and her own soul? You'll have to read and find out - but be warned... it's a bumpy road...

When Coraline steps through a door to find another house strangely similar to her own (only better), things seem marvelous.

But there's another mother there, and another father, and they want her to stay and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go.

Coraline will have to fight with all her wits and courage if she is to save herself and return to her ordinary life.
