Its 1970 and Francis Dempsey is an Irish Catholic boy living in
Kilburn, North London. He decides irrevocably he doesnt believe in
God, and, mindful of the Christian associations of his name,
changes it to Frank. He is a likeable, easy-going lad with a
charismatic personality and natural social skills, enjoying
drinking, girls, collecting old singles, and appearing as a DJ.
After poor A level results a lucky connection between a
schoolmaster and university lecturer gives him the opportunity to
get into Oxford the easy way: to study for a theology degree.
Popular among the Old Etonions due to his lack of pretensions and
his way with women, Frank works and plays hard but upon graduation
finds himself with no job to go to. After a few weeks of boredom he
decides to apply to become a priest after all, he may have no faith
in God, but he has all the other necessary skills in abundance. He
is a natural at getting parishioners to work together, successfully
restoring the decrepit church hall with their free labour and cash.
When a parishioner leaves Frank his black cab in his will, Frank
becomes a taxi-driver to raise funds for the now thriving
community. One day Sarah Marshall, a young woman uneasily involved
in the advertising business, gets into his cab. They are instantly
attracted to each other. But Frank has taken his vow of celibacy
and cannot pursue a relationship with a woman. His heart, however,
has other plans. This is a light-touch, well-written first novel,
using the authors successful background in advertising to good
effect, and with enough 1970s icons to please the most nostalgic
reader. (Kirkus UK)
This is a story about a Roman Catholic priest who runs his North
London parish whilst harbouring an almighty secret: he doesn't
believe in God. This doesn't stop him from being hugely successful,
if a little unconventional in his work. He raises money by driving
a London taxi and everything is going well until Sarah hops into
his cab and into his life.
