Essentially, 34 illustrated pages dedicated to the point that
"most" (?) people need sleep. "Sleep is the time when part of your
brain takes a rest" from thinking, though it does dream (and dreams
are "mixed-up thoughts"). Showers tells us that when some
"scientists" went without sleep to find out what would happen, they
grew cross and mean and forgot things, and ends characteristically
with the hint that though it's sometimes hard, "most of the time I
go to bed when my mother tells me." Despite the reference to
scientific experiment, there's really not much here that kids
haven't been told repeatedly at bedtime. (Kirkus Reviews)
Bedtime often seems to come too early, but what would happen if you never went to sleep? When scientists decided to find out, they discovered that your brain needs a rest after a long day of thinking, just as your muscles would need a rest after a long day of work.
A different kind of bedtime story, this book is the perfect response to the question ‘Can’t I stay up a little longer?’
