Adapted by Stephen Russell, The Firework-Maker's Daughter, is award
winning children's writer Philip Pullman's brilliant and inspiring
story about Lila, who dreams of becoming a firework-maker just like
her father. Her hopes are dashed when her father tells her it is no
job for a girl. Setting out in secret for Mount Merapi in search of
the elusive royal sulphur, Lila faces pirates and supernatural
creatures until Chulak arrives to help her with Hamlet the
elephant. And soon she must return to save her imprisoned father
with a firework display that must rival the best on earth Fun for
all the family, and fizzing with drama and magic, The
Firework-Maker's Daughter opened at Birmingham Stage in November
2010. Adapted for the stage in a colourful and musical manner.
Catchy tunes, impressive costumes and subtle yet effective special
effects make for a fun family day out and highlights include the
stunning costume of talking white elephant Hamlet and the
beautifully crafted puppets used to help tell the tale.- Amy Burns,
