More tripping with R. D. Laing, the New Left psychoanalyst out of
Tavistock Institute and the ongoing Marxist historical
sociology-Freudian psychology synthesis. His ideas are now fairly
well known - the internalized family (family as fantasy structure)
generates brutal psychic pressures on the unknowing individual; the
phenomenon of the false-self system, which uncouples the self from
the body; the causal relationship between societal madness and
personal schizophrenia; the possibility of freedom and health
through a "voyage" into insanity (a route Laing himself has gone).
Laing's thinking has had an enormous impact on current progressive
psychiatric thinking and, more recently, on the radical young.
However, this new book, a collection of papers given in 1967-68
(including the prestigious CBC Massey Lectures), adds little to
Laing's theory system - he's said most of it before, though hardly
better, in his major works, such as The Divided Self, The Politics
of Experience, and Sanity, Madness, and the Family. This is simply
a forget-me-knot. (Kirkus Reviews)
Originally published in 1969, based on the talks R. D. Laing gave
in 1967 and 68, this book was intended by the author to evoke
questions rather than provide answers. Using concepts of
schizophrenia, R.D. Laing demonstrates that we tend to invalidate
the subjective and experiential and accept the proper societal view
of what should occur within the family.
