they forged conceptions of citizenship that were limited to
national contexts, restricted categories of voters, and 'advanced'
stages of civilization. Weaving together the convergence and
divergence of an Atlantic revolutionary discourse, debates on
citizenship, and the intellectual repercussions of the Terror and
