Homeopathy has many supporters, including members of the Royal family, and there are medical practitioners who use both orthodox and homeopathic treatments. Some are sceptical of a system which claims to cure patients using minute dosages of substances that cause the same symptoms in a healthy person, but if you are an enthusiast, or would simply like to know more, then this is the book for you. This is the sixth edition of Samuel Hahnemann's work, completed before his death in 1843, but translated into a reader-friendlier form in 1983. Here Hahnemann, the founding father of homeopathy, lays out his principles and reasons for the practice of homeopathy; he stresses the importance of identifying and treating all the symptoms and emphasizes how necessary it is for extensive, careful and reliable observations and tests to be made in order to establish the correct substances to be used; he gives details about the preparation of these substances, their dosage and the size of dose; no dose, he says, is too small to be effective. Many of his recommendations are relevant and self-evident today: the patient should be seen as a whole, with lifestyle and environment taken into account, for example; it is also wise to avoid coffee, tea or alcohol and stressful situations during treatment. Although we might find other advice quaint - things to be avoided for the patient include woollen underwear, prolonged siestas and 'enervation from salacious reading' - his methods to restore health 'rapidly, gently and permanently' must have been a welcome change at a time when conventional therapies included bloodletting and strong emetics, and when treatment of the mentally ill, which Hahnemann criticizes as heartless, had changed little since the Middle Ages.
