1917. The book begins: Henry Calverly, 3rd, had a few hours every
week or two when power seemed to flow through him, bound from a
mysterious source to a vague end. The rest of the time he wavered
between listless revery-he would walk the streets hour after hour
lost in a maze of wandering dreams-and discouragement.
