Nobel Prize -- winner Gunnar Myrdal was one of the century's
leading social scientists, best known in American for the classic
An American Dilemma, his study of America's racial problems. That
book was chosen as one of the Modern Library's top one hundred
nonfiction books of the century, and has probably influenced
American thought as much as any since de Tocqueville's Democracy in
America.
The Essential Myrdal covers the full range of Myrdal's other
writing, much of which has never been published in book form. It
includes his early essays on economics, his thoughts on the
population question, his discussions of value in the social
sciences, and excerpts from Asian Drama, his monumental study of
the development of Asia.
