Stephen Coonts has acquired a considerable following for such
gritty thrillers as America and Hong Kong, specialising in
well-researched, authentic detail. But few of the best writers are
content to repeat themselves, and Saucer represents a quantum leap
for Coonts in terms of both ambition and achievement. His hero Rip
Cantrell is a seismic surveyor working in the Sahara. He spots a
glint of reflected light in the distance, and his investigations
unearth a piece of metal entombed in the sandstone. Rip and his
associates uncover a mysterious vessel - one of alien provenance -
that has been resting in the sands for 140,000 years. But their
astonishing secret is soon hijacked by a US airforce UFO
investigation team and a group sent by an Australian billionaire
keen to acquire the vessel's secret. And in the middle of this edgy
situation, the Libyan military makes an unwelcome appearance. As
the danger grows on all sides, Rip (with the aid of a beguiling
female ex-airforce test pilot) tries to find out how the flight
systems of the saucer work, thinking that there is only one way to
save the ship from these warring factions... but a highly dangerous
one. There is no great profundity here, but who cares? This is a
highly satisfactory piece of thriller writing, crammed with
ingenious detail (the eponymous saucer itself, for instance) and
punchy, idiosyncratic plotting. If Coonts's hero is cut from a very
familiar cloth, the reader is hardly likely to worry about that as
the action barrels along. (Kirkus UK)
A team of surveyors working in the Sahara happen upon an object
buried deep in the rock. The object turns out to be a flying saucer
and it is older than the rock it is buried in - 140,000 years old
at least. Rip, a student working with the team, is keen to find out
as much about the flying saucer as possible. But so are many other
people, including the US Military, a team working for a billionaire
Australian businessman and a group of Arabs. Rip foils their
attempts to commandeer the craft with the help of a disillusioned
female pilot called Charley. Together they steal the saucer and
Charley takes them both into orbit. Rip's plan is to take the
saucer to his uncle's Missouri farm - but first he has to avoid
being tracked down by everyone else.
