This is a pictorial record of the Chartist Movement. Photography
was in its infancy in those years and the only photographic record
of a Chartist gathering is of the last of the great meetings in
April 1848. Pictures of the Chartists themselves as they appeared
in those years are all from wood or metal engravings mostly
published by Chartist newspapers. An introduction provides a
background to the pictures and their captions.
