Collection of short stories, many set in Osaka where the Canadian
author has evidently worked as an English teacher. These are the
best ones, especially the comic and elegiac first-person accounts
of encounters with aspects of Japanese life. In one of them, the
narrator is kidnapped by yakuza in a feud between rival schools of
English, and eventually escapes them from a public bath. It has the
quality of a film seen while half-asleep and dreaming, and this may
be how he experienced Japan. Heighton is observant, funny and
sensitive, and one can't blame him for trying out his range in the
other stories, using different voices and themes; he does this well
enough but they don't quite fit together. Still, he is a writer to

The stories in this collection explore Japan and the cultural
differences between East and West as witnessed by a young
traveller. The author examines how we recognize our foreignness
when away from home and the difficulty of translation between
generations.
