In the past, many textile mills have been demolished rather than
adapted for new uses. Structural engineering uncertainties have
stood in the way of the successful conversion of many fine mill
buildings and it is the aim of this ICE design and practice guide
to remove some of these uncertainties. Intended primarily for civil
or structural engineers who may be concerned with the appraisal or
structural alteration of textile mills, the guide should also
appeal to others with an interest in 19th-century industrial
buildings.
