Within the broad chapel of crime writing a new genre seems to be
emerging: treachery and double dealing in the business world.
Harrison sets his thriller in San Francisco, where the rich in
their detached houses, set in acres of leafy hillside, envy the
very, very rich who never have to think about loan repayments. The
good life is never quite good enough for Nick Weston, whose
father's legacy to him is the belief that hard work and effort are
not enough: this unfair world is full of sonsofbitches and to
survive you need to think of yourself first. Weston seems to have
achieved what he considers the American Dream: an advertising firm
set up with his friend from college days, a beautiful wife, a Saab
convertible. His cleverly designed office is situated in a
fashionable part of the city, his partner is a creative genius and
he himself is skilled at making a pitch. What could go wrong?
Harrison is adept at describing the fatigue that builds up with a
high flyer's unrelenting concentration on the next clever move, the
fear of losing a contract and the insecurity that comes with big
money deals. When the bank threatens to withdraw their support,
Weston's terror of losing everything makes him blind to everything
else. The first person narrative draws the reader into his
nightmare struggle to keep one step ahead of his unscrupulous
business rivals. Gradually his sense of right and wrong becomes
blurred and he fails to see what is apparent to his wife and friend
- ambition might cost him far more than material wealth. It's an
unsettling, but exciting, story. (Kirkus UK)
Nick Weston is the envy of all his friends with his own advertising company, a beautiful house in San Francisco, and a gorgeous wife whom he loves more than anything. But he's secretly living on a knife edge: at any moment his business could fold and his world could be torn apart.
Blinded by success, Nick can't see the desperate fate that awaits him. And when his luck finally begins to run out he is left wondering just how far he will have to go to save his dream life and his marriage. Robbery? Blackmail? Or even murder?
