It is Sydney in 1942 and, with the whole Australian nation under
threat of a Japanese military takeover, idealistic young priest
Frank Darragh finds that individuals in his own community are
facing invasions of other kinds. Food shortages, missing husbands
and fathers and over-generous American forces fill confessionals
with tales of personal battles against corruption. For a
representative of the Catholic Church matters should be black and
white, but Frank finds the line between saving others' souls and
losing his own beginning to blur when a beautiful married woman
stirs his compassion. When one of his parishioners appears to have
been murdered for their sins, the priest is set at odds with the
establishment. Against the grand backdrop of world war, there's no
ceasefire for adultery, racism and murder and Frank seems to be
abandoned by both man and God as he struggles to fulfil his office.
This is a deeply moving and thought-provoking work from Booker
Prize winner Thomas Keneally. The stories of individual integrity
and of courage found to challenge dogma are truly uplifting.
Innocence is stripped away but a number of the characters in the
book find grace to live and (in some cases) die well. In spite of
the horrors we witness, by the end the reader is filled with hope
and understanding of what it means to be a better person. It is a
highly emotional story which offers much for quiet consideration
and as a result is an immensely satisfying read. (Kirkus UK)
