In his humble sleeping-room Arabin lived in a fictitious world;
from the occasional neglect of his studies, he was regarded by his
teachers as a boy of slender abilities; nay, he often feigned bad
health to escape the irksome restraints of a public school. At
certain periods, however, the meanness of such conduct would break
upon his mind.
