gentle way considering the magnitude of the era's consequences.
Before the settlers? arrival, the Great Plains were covered with
thick green grass that held sod into place. Poor agricultural
practices including plowing very deeply in order to plant wheat,
combined with years of sustained drought caused the Dust Bowl.
Disease, death, and loss of land during this time were a painful,
daily reality for the farmers and their families in the southern
Plains. Although the northern Plains were not so badly affected,
these events lengthen the Great Depression years.
