The period from the Indian wars to WWI saw the evolution of the
U.S. Army from a 25,000 man frontier constabulary to a modern
professionally led two million man force fighting in a coalition
war in Europe. This study describes the context within which the
Leavenworth schools--begun in 1881--evolved.
