This is an account and analysis of the United Nations peacekeeping
operation mounted in Cambodia betwween 1991 and 1993 in fulfilment
of the 1991 Paris Peace Settlement. Although its mission was
jeopardized by non-cooperation of the Khymer Rouge, the UN
Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) successfully guided
Cambodia back to democratic, constitutional government and relative
peace. This study reveals the successes and failures of UNTAC and
draws lessons for future UN peacekeeping operations.
