This book will fill an important gap in the knowledge of Middle
Eastern cities by reconstructing the historical process of
Sanandaj's formation and development until the rise of
modernization in Iran. It discusses the nature of Kurdish
settlements and the interaction between the social and spatial
forces that have conditioned the processes and patterns of city
formation and development over time. It identifies distinctive
aspects of Kurdish settlements, such as their extroverted
connection with the landscape, and the fluent interplay between
private and public realms in female experience, providing a
foundation for further studies of other Kurdish cities in the
region. It will be an excellent resource for students and
researchers of urban studies, geography, social science, and
Kurdish studies.

Four friends meet up at their old school to open the memory box
they stowed there years ago - with five letters inside for four of
them, because their friend Millie has died. When they open the box
they find a new letter from Millie and discover that she has left
them special instructions: permission to open her letter only if
they all read aloud the letters they wrote to their older selves,
revealing their deepest secrets. Particularly suitable for
struggling, reluctant and dyslexic readers aged 13+
The fixity or mobility of borders are key themes within the border
studies literature and have useful critical application to urban
and environmental planning through theory, pedagogy and practice.
This offers potential for transformative change through the
processes of re-bordering and re-orienting established boundary
demarcations in ways that support and promote sustainability in a
climate of change. Planning Across Borders in a Climate of Change
draws on a range of diverse case studies from Australasia, North
and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia and
offers the application of border theory, concepts and principles to
planning as a critical lens. It applies this lens to a range of
international case studies in key areas such as climate change
adaptation, food security, spatial planning, critical
infrastructure and urban ecology. This collection fills an
important gap in the border studies literature, bringing climate
change considerations to bear on planning. It should be of interest
to students, scholars and professionals in the field of urban and
environmental planning, climate change adaptation, border studies,
urban studies, human and political geography, environmental studies
and development.

This book argues that a renewed consideration of artistic value
should both critique contemporary bureaucratic misunderstandings of
what art is and address the complexities and questions of
contemporary philosophers in new and provocative ways. Writer and
poet Ali Alizadeh focusses on the artistic theories of the key
Western philosopher of value, Karl Marx. He explores Marx's
thoughts on art and literature and provides a new account of his
revolutionary view of why we make art and how we understand art's
value. By returning to Marx's writings, from his juvenile poetry
and earliest journalism to his final publications, Alizadeh
proposes a theory which not only challenges many tenets of
contemporary Marxist literary or cultural theory, but one which
also presents us with a profound, coherent and stimulating theory
of art that defines, values and demonstrates artistic practice. By
mapping Marx's intellectual development from the ideals of a young
Hegelian to the polemics of a seasoned internationalist communist
he shows that Marx never lost sight of art as a key aspect of human
activity.

Real-world information is imperfect and is usually described in
natural language (NL). Moreover, this information is often
partially reliable and a degree of reliability is also expressed in
NL. In view of this, the concept of a Z-number is a more adequate
concept for the description of real-world information. The main
critical problem that naturally arises in processing
Z-numbers-based information is the computation with Z-numbers.
Nowadays, there is no arithmetic of Z-numbers suggested in existing
literature. This book is the first to present a comprehensive and
self-contained theory of Z-arithmetic and its applications. Many of
the concepts and techniques described in the book, with carefully
worked-out examples, are original and appear in the literature for
the first time. The book will be helpful for professionals,
academics, managers and graduate students in fuzzy logic, decision
sciences, artificial intelligence, mathematical economics, and
computational economics.
The relationship between religion and the state has entered a new
phase ever since the Iranian Revolution more than three decades
ago. The recent mass uprisings against autocratic rulers in the
Arab world have highlighted the potency of Islamist forces in
post-revolutionary societies in the region, a force arguably
unlocked first by Iran's version of the 'spring' three decades ago.
The economic ramifications of these uprisings are of special
interest at a time when the possibility of the creation of Islamic
states can have implications for their economic policy and
performance again. A study of the Iranian experience in itself can
offer rare insights whether for its own features and
characteristics or for its possible lessons and implications for
recent events in the region. This book is concerned with the
economic aspects and consequences of the Iranian Revolution in
general and its interaction with the international economy in
particular. Many studies have to date dealt with Iran's economic
challenges, policies and performance in the post-revolutionary
period but its interaction with the international economy -
although of growing importance - has not received sufficient
attention. The contributions in this volume by experts in the field
address ways in which in the span of three decades, Iran's economy
has evolved from a strong aspiration to develop an 'independent
economy' to grappling with debilitating international economic
sanctions.

This study investigates the role of coagulation in enhancing
hydraulic performance and permeate quality of UF membranes and
provides insight into options for minimizing or ideally eliminating
coagulation from UF pre-treatment to SWRO. Results show that
coagulation improves UF hydraulic performance mainly by reducing
non-backwashable fouling of the membranes. This can be achieved at
very low coagulant dose ( 0.5 mg Fe/L) by coating the membranes
with sub-micron particles.
Additionally, the work highlights the applicability of UF membranes
with low molecular weight cut-off as the coagulant free future of
SWRO pre-treatment. Major benefits in terms of reduced
environmental impact is expected when applying membranes with low
molecular weight cut-off, as the need for coagulation is eliminated
while ensuring longevity of downstream SWRO membranes. In general
terms, the research indicates that coagulant consumption can be
significantly reduced in UF pre-treatment of SWRO by optimizing
operational parameters and applying alternative solutions.

Global Trends of Smart Cities provides integrated analysis of 135
cities that participated in the IBM's Smarter Cities Challenge in
2010-2017. It establishes evidence-based benchmarking of city
geographies, city sizes, governance structures, and local planning
contexts in smart cities. This book uses a combination of
descriptive statistical analysis and real-world case study
narratives to evaluate the ways in which each individual urban
variable or their combination matter in the diversity of smart city
approaches around the globe. It is acknowledged that the Smarter
Cities Challenge offers a particular set of smart initiatives and
is not representative of all smart cities around the world.
Nevertheless, the global presence of the Challenge across five
continents and its involvement with 135 cities of all size and
socioeconomic status provides a solid foundation to conduct
comparative research on smart cities. Considering limited
comparative research available in the smart city debate, this book
makes significant contribution in understanding the state of smart
city development in urban governments worldwide.

The pomegranate, Punica granatum L., is one of the oldest known
edible fruits and is associated with the ancient civilizations of
the Middle East. This is the first comprehensive book covering the
botany, production, processing, health and industrial uses of the
pomegranate. The cultivation of this fruit for fresh consumption,
juice production and medicinal purposes has expanded more than
tenfold over the past 20 years. Presenting a review of pomegranate
growing, from a scientific and horticultural perspective, this book
provides information on how to increase yields and improve short-
and medium-term grower profitability and sustainability. It covers:
practices to mitigate pests, diseases and abiotic stresses;
yield-based nutrition management; cultural practices for cultivars
with horticultural traits such as earliness, high yield, improved
taste, soft seeds, disease resistance, and low splitting and
sunscald rates; increasing crop diversity to aid crop security; and
composition, food uses and medicinal uses. This book is essential
literature for researchers in horticulture, for growers and for
those involved in the pomegranate industry.
Understanding Urbanism presents built environment students with the

engineers and other built environment professionals design our
cities. Importantly, the book shows how and why the built
environment professional of the future will need to work within the
Indigenous context of cities in countries like Australia, New
Zealand, the United States and Canada.
