Many policies in several Western European countries and the U.S. aim to counter spatial concentrations of deprivation and create more socio-economically mixed residential areas. Such policies are founded on the belief that neighbourhoods have a strong and independent effect upon the well-being and life-chances of individuals. The adequacy of the evidence base to support this position has been the subject of spirited debate on both sides of the Atlantic. The primary purpose of this book is to contribute to this policy-relevant discussion by presenting new scholarship from many countries that rigorously quantifies various sorts of neighbourhood effects through the use of cutting-edge social scientific techniques. The secondary purpose of this book is to introduce these techniques to a wider array of housing and planning researchers and to show how a variety of disciplines have offered insightful, synergistic perspectives. Research on neighbourhood effects has over the last 15 years led to a body of knowledge extending far beyond the sociological urban research where it originated. Visualization and Verbalization of Data shows how correspondence analysis and related techniques enable the display of data in graphical form, which results in the verbalization of the structures in data. Renowned researchers in the field trace the history of these techniques and cover their current applications. The first part of the book explains the historical origins of correspondence analysis and associated methods. The second part concentrates on the contributions made by the school of Jean-Paul Benzecri and related movements, such as social space and geometric data analysis. Although these topics are viewed from a French perspective, the book makes them understandable to an international audience. In 2004, the ISA Research Committee on Logic and Methodology (RC33) jointly with the Department of Methodology and Statistics of Utrecht University, the Netherlands Institute for the Social Sciences (SISWO), and the Netherlands Association for Methodological Research in the Social Sciences (NOSMO) organized, in Amsterdam, the Sixth International Conference on Social Science Methodology. The theme of the conference was Recent Developments and Applications in Social Research Methodology. The aim of this book is to reflect the substantial re- search done in Artificial Intelligence on sorts and types. The main contributions come from knowledge representation and theorem proving and important impulses come from the "application areas," i.e. natural language (understanding) systems, computational linguistics, and logic programming. The workshop brought together researchers from logic, theoretical computer science, theorem proving, knowledge representation, linguistics, logic programming and qualitative reasoning.

Professor Wilhelm Blasius, physiologist at Giessen in West Germany, has written a book "Probleme der Lebensforschung" (Verlag Rombach, Freiburg 1973) which - I understand - is to be published in an English version. To me it has been of interest as an orientation in a world of traditional German thinking, best known from Goethe's natural philosophy of perceptible "Ur- bilder", which perhaps in English could be rendered descriptively by calling it an inner vision of further irre- ducible totalities. It is in contemporary language a kind of intuitive 'holistic' insight which represents understanding different from that of natural science. The latter is devoted to the study of causal chains, is largely experimental and in its aim ultimately 'reduc- tionist' -to use another modern term. Goethe's approach is reincarnated in the "Wesenslehre" of the late Ludwig Klages (1872-1956) and in the thinking of Carl Gustav Caruso To Klages the perceived image alone is the meaning of everything in this world and in this sense he is the advocate of a psychological phenom- enology that is an end in itself. Originally trained as a chemist Klages soon turned to philosophy and de- veloped a system of concepts supposed to give a deeper insight into the essence of life than did the endless causal chains of natural science. Blasius makes much use of the concepts of this philosopher, in particular his ideas on 'polarities'.

This text contends that being gay or lesbian is by definition political. The continually rising public consciousness of the needs and interests of gays and lesbians provides Blasius with a vehicle for showing how a particular aspect of human life comes to assume political dimensions.

This book serves as an introduction to the work of Godfrey Winham, an influential figure in American music theory circles in the 1960s. Little published in his lifetime, Winham left behind, at his premature death in 1974, a massive collection of notes: correspondence, unfinished articles, sketches for books, etc. These notes were transcribed and deposited in the Special Collections of Firestone Library at Princeton University. They cover a fascinating range of subjects: exercises in analytical logic, thoughts on the construction of a formally consistent music theory, studies of particular pieces, and an epistemological reconception of Schenker's analysis.

In "The Music Theory of Godfrey Winham," Leslie David Blasius attempts to synthesize the various aspects of the theorist's thinking into a single coherent, if unfinished, endeavor. Blasius concentrates in particular on Winham's attempts to define formally the basic terms of music theory, his axiomatic phenomenology of pitch and harmonic relations, his tentative steps towards an axiomatic phenomenology of rhythm, and his fresh consideration of the reciprocal relationship between theory and analysis. Lernhilfen in Form von Hilfe- oder auch Tippkarten werden als Material zur Differenzierung im Unterricht eingesetzt. Ob diese Lernenden tatsachlich helfen, ist bisher unzureichend geklart. Fur die vorliegende Untersuchung dienen sog. Strategieschlussel als Interventionsinstrument. Theoretisch ist zu vermuten, dass die Schlussel den Einsatz von Strategien triggern und die Selbstregulation im Bearbeitungsprozess anregen. Im Kontext des mathematischen Problemloesens wird untersucht, auf welche Art und Weise die Strategieschlussel den Problembearbeitungsprozess von Dritt- bis Viertklasslern beeinflussen. Die quantitativen Analysen ergeben einen statistisch hoch signifikanten Zusammenhang zwischen der Interaktion mit den Strategieschlusseln, dem Heurismeneinsatz und dem Wechsel zwischen Episoden im Problembearbeitungsprozess. Die qualitativen Analysen zeigen, dass die Strategieschlussel auf neun verschiedene Weisen genutzt werden, der Einsatz von Heurismen durch sie getriggert wird und dass selbstregulatorische Tatigkeiten angeregt werden. Bei der Verwendung der Strategieschlussel werden neun Muster identifiziert.
