The Arctic Tundra and adjacent Boreal Forest or Taiga support the
most cold-adapted flora and fauna on Earth. The evolutionary
capacity of both plants and animals to adapt to these thermally
limiting conditions has always attracted biological investigation
and is a central theme of this book. How the polar biota will adapt
to a warmer world is creating significant and renewed interest in
this habitat. The Arctic has always been subject to climatic
fluctuation and the polar biota has successfully adapted to these
changes throughout its evolutionary history. Whether or not
climatic warming will allow the Boreal Forest to advance onto the
treeless Tundra is one of the most tantalizing questions that can
be asked today in relation to terrestrial polar biology.
Tundra-Taiga Biology provides a circum-polar perspective of
adaptation to low temperatures and short growing seasons, together
with a history of climatic variation as it has affected the
evolution of terrestrial life in the Tundra and the adjacent
forested Taiga. It will appeal to researchers new to the field and
to the many students, professional ecologists and conservation
practitioners requiring a concise but authoritative overview of the
biome. Its accessibility also makes it suitable for undergraduate
and graduate students taking courses in tundra, taiga, and arctic
ecology.

Joel Schumacher directs this drama based on the
semi-autobiographical novel by Nick McDonell. Set in the world of
the super-rich in Manhattan's Upper East Side, the film is a
disturbing chronicle of privileged urban adolescence. Despite his
unlimited potential, rich kid White Mike (Chace Crawford) has
dropped out of his senior year at high school and spends his days
selling marijuana to his ultra-privileged friends. But Mike's
charmed existence hits a brick wall when his cousin is brutally
murdered in an East Harlem project and his best friend is arrested
for the crime. The supporting cast includes Emma Roberts, Ellen
Barkin, 50 Cent and Rory Culkin. Keifer Sutherland narrates.

Whit Stillman helms this offbeat romantic-musical-comedy following
a group of social misfits as they negotiate the minefield of
college life. Greta Gerwig stars as Violet, the emotionally fragile
yet overbearing leader of a pretentious group of girls who imagine
themselves superior to everyone else when in fact they are for the
most part ignored by their fellow students. Everyday concerns such
as dating disappointments, essay grades and social mores give way
to the more perilous pitfalls of female friendship after the girls
take it upon themselves to befriend new student Lily (Analeigh
Tipton).
Since the early 20th century the scholarly study of Anglo-Saxon
texts has been augmented by systematic excavation and analysis of
physical evidence - settlements, cemeteries, artefacts,
environmental data, and standing buildings. This evidence has
confirmed some readings of the Anglo-Saxon literary and documentary
sources and challenged others. More recently, large-scale
excavations both in towns and in the countryside, the application
of computer methods to large bodies of data, new techniques for
site identification such as remote sensing, and new dating methods
have put archaeology at the forefront of Anglo-Saxon studies. The
Handbook of Anglo-Saxon Archaeology, written by a team of experts
and presenting the results of the most up-to-date research, will
both stimulate and support further investigation into those aspects
of Anglo-Saxon life and culture which archaeology has fundamentally
illuminated. It will prove an essential resourse for our
understanding of a society poised at the interface between
prehistory and history.
