The thesis presents a tool to create rubble pile asteroid simulants
for use in numerical impact experiments, and provides evidence that
the asteroid disruption threshold and the resultant fragment size
distribution are sensitive to the distribution of internal voids.
This thesis represents an important step towards a deeper
understanding of fragmentation processes in the asteroid belt, and
provides a tool to infer the interior structure of rubble pile
asteroids. Most small asteroids are 'rubble piles' - re-accumulated
fragments of debris from earlier disruptive collisions. The study
of fragmentation processes for rubble pile asteroids plays an
essential part in understanding their collisional evolution. An
important unanswered question is "what is the distribution of void
space inside rubble pile asteroids?" As a result from this thesis,
numerical impact experiments can now be used to link surface
features to the internal structure and therefore help to answer
this question. Applying this model to asteroid Steins, which was
imaged from close range by the Rosetta spacecraft, a large
hill-like structure is shown to be most likely primordial, while a
catena of pits can be interpreted as evidence for the existence of
fracturing of pre-existing internal voids.

Targeting regional economic development (TRED) has a long and
rich tradition among academic economists and in the world of
economic development practitioners. This book builds on a series of
workshops and papers organized by The Northeast Regional Center for
Rural Development (NERCRD) at the Pennsylvania State University and
the Rural Policy Research Centre (RUPRI) at the University of
Missouri. Through the coordinated efforts of NERCRD and RUPRI, a
network of university based researchers and Extension education
specialists was developed and provides the foundation of this new
edited volume.
For the first time in a single book, Goetz, Deller and Harris
present an innovative approach through a collection of chapters
discussing industry targeting and the relevance of TRED as an
important analytical tool for practical targeting purposes. The
papers present issues surrounding community economic development,
clusters in industry and rural communities and the role of
agglomeration economies. The book provides the reader with insights
into not only the theoretical foundations of targeting as well as
empirical methods, but also approaches for using the
community-level analysis to affect policy directions.
Local Food Systems and Community Economic Development provides
scholarly and practical knowledge on a range of issues often
associated with local food system development. Many people agree
that there are unintended consequences associated with the manner
in which our food supply chain has evolved. These concerns range in
focus from health, to environment, to economic structure, to social
justice. But, for each argument critical of our current food
system, there are to be found strong counter-arguments; the popular
press is replete with stories that lean toward taking specific
sides in these arguments, often demonizing those on the other side.
In this volume local food scholars strive to be fair, balanced, and
as factual as possible in their arguments. This even-handed
approach is appropriate as it should foster more sustainable
community change and should lead us toward a stronger foundation
for scholarly inquiry and ultimately more respect and credibility
for efforts to better understand the phenomenon of local and
regional food system development. Amidst a deepening interest in
local food systems as a community economic development strategy,
Local Food Systems and Community Economic Development will be of
great interest to scholars of community development, rural studies,
agriculture, food systems, and rural economy. The chapters
originally published as a special issue of Community Development.
In Social Capital at the Community Level, John Halstead and Steven
Deller examine social capital formation beyond the individual level
through a variety of disciplines: planning, economics, regional
development, sociology, as well as non-traditional approaches like
engineering and built environmental features. The notion of social
capital in community and economic development has become a focus of
intense interest for policy makers, practitioners, and academics.
The notion is that communities with higher levels of social capital
(networks, trust, and norms) will prosper both economically and
socially. In a practical sense, how do communities use the notion
of social capital to build policies and strategies to move their
community forward? Are all forms of social capital the same and do
all have a positive influence on the community? To help gain
insights into these fundamental questions Social Capital at the
Community Level takes a holistic, interdisciplinary or systems
approach to thinking about the community. While those who study
social capital will acknowledge the need for an interdisciplinary
approach, most stay within their disciplinary silos. One could say
there is strong bonding social capital within disciplines but
little bridging social capital across disciplines. The contributors
to Social Capital at the Community Level have made an attempt to
build that bridging social capital. While disciplinary biases and
research approaches are evident there is significant overlap about
how people with different disciplinary perspectives think about
social capital and how it can be applied at the community level.
This can be from neighborhoods addressing a localized issue to a
global response to a natural disaster. This book is an invaluable
resource for scholars, researchers and policy makers of community
and economic development, as well as rural sociologists and
planners looking to understand the opaque process of social capital
formation in communities.

Reality television is one of the defining genres of the 21st
century. It is shown worldwide, features people from all walks of
life and covers everything from romance to religion. It has not
only changed television, but every other area of the media. So why
has reality TV become such a huge phenomenon, and what is its
future in an age of streaming and social media? This book provides
an overview of key theories and debates in the study of reality
television and discusses industry practices in their global and
national contexts. Deller also explores, through interviews with
participants and analyses of key programmes, why people take part
in reality TV, how they are represented and impact this has on
their lives. From its documentary roots to its social media present
and future - this is a guide to Reality Television: The TV
Phenomenon that Changed the World.

Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of his death, this
book presents new articles by leading authorities on John Ireland
and his music, together with transcriptions of his broadcast talks
and of interviews with the composer. John Ireland [1879-1962] was
one of the most distinctive and distinguished of a generation of
exceptional British composers that included Vaughan Williams,
Gustav Holst, Frank Bridge and Arnold Bax. They emerged in the
decade before the First World War and, in the inter-war years,
produced a remarkable body of music. In Ireland's case his was not
only the most popular British Piano Concerto of its time, but he
also composed a splendid repertoire of songs, piano music, chamber
music and orchestral and choral scores. This richly illustrated
Companion will be essential for all admirers of the composer. Not
only for the performer - pianist, singer, conductor - but for
thewider musical public, record collectors and music historians,
academics and anyone interested in British music of the earlier
twentieth century. Lewis Foreman has drawn on his extensive
research into Ireland's life and letters over many years, and, in
association with the John Ireland Charitable Trust, has not only
commissioned a wide range of chapters from leading performers and
writers of today, but has brought together in one convenient format
Ireland's own writings on music, the memories of his friends and
students (including Britten, Moeran and Arnell) and a selection of
important earlier articles. The Companion also includes a complete
list of works and themost comprehensive discography of Ireland ever
compiled. The accompanying CD contains historical recordings
featuring the voice of John Ireland, with two of his broadcast
talks, as well as otherwise unobtainable performances of Ireland's
music from the composer himself and from other well-known
performers of the past. LEWIS FOREMAN is author of Bax: A Composer
and His Time [Boydell, 2007] and London: a Musical Gazetteer [Yale
2005]. Contributors: FELIX APRAHAMIAN, RICHARD ARNELL, BENJAMIN

In 1983, an unknown 23-year-old from Suffolk called Keith Deller
took the darts world by storm, defying the odds and sporting
conventions to become a most unlikely world champion. Deller was
the diametric opposite of the beer-swigging, chain-smoking,
paunch-bellied darts player fans were used to. He was slim,
well-spoken, athletic and didn't smoke or drink. And he looked like
a boy next to his flabby, middle-aged opponents. A TV audience of
10 million watched transfixed as this angelic newcomer beat world
number-one Eric Bristow in the final. Almost overnight, Keith had
breathed new life into a game whose traditions had been hewn in the
nation's smoky pubs and clubs. Deller was a new breed of darts
player whose appeal transcended this gritty working-class sport,
piquing the interest of intellectuals such as Martin Amis and
Stephen Fry. In 138, Keith takes the reader on an intimate journey
as we relive his rapid rise from complete obscurity to lifting the
game's greatest prize as one of the youngest world champions in
history.

While many rural areas continue to experience depopulation and
economic decline, others are facing rapid in-migration, as well as
employment and income growth. Much of this growth is due to the
presence and use of amenity resources, broadly defined as qualities
of a region that make it an attractive place to live and work.
Rather than extracting natural resources for external markets,
these communities have begun to build economies based on promoting
environmental quality. Amenities and Rural Development explores the
paradigmatic shift in how we view land resources and the potential
for development in amenity-rich rural regions. Amenity-based growth
can lead to several paths, based largely on proximity to urban
areas and the type of development that occurs, whether it be
seasonal residents, retirees, or tourism. The distributional
implications of amenity-led development are an important
consideration for policy, both within and between communities and
regions. The contributors conclude that public policy needs to
focus on maximizing complementary and supplementary uses while
minimizing antagonistic uses of amenities. Scholars and
policymakers concerned with economic development and natural
resource management will find this comprehensive volume of great
interest.
'What makes Art is Magic so rewarding is that Deller can write.
Strikingly, he finds the literary process "mortifying . . . as
though I am slowly dying". Perhaps it is that painful intensity
that electrifies his prose, which comes across as crystalline,
athletic, earnest yet frequently funny.' - Financial Times 'His
work is hilarious and touching' - David Byrne 'Making good
political art is almost impossible. Deller makes it fun. What sets
him apart is his utopian optimism and belief in people.' - Jonathan
Jones, The Guardian Art is Magic is artist Jeremy Deller's attempt
to tie up the key works of his career alongside the art, pop music,
film, politics and history that have inspired his work. Much has
been written about Deller over the decades but this is the first
time he has pulled together all of his cultural touchstones. The
book features work from across Deller's life and art and includes
Sacrilege, the inflatable Stonehenge, the Iggy Pop Life Class, The
Battle of Orgreave, a recreation of a confrontation from the
Miners' Strike, bats (a subject in at least three of Deller's
works), Andy Warhol (whom he met in 1986), rave culture, hen
harriers pecking out the eyes of a Tory MP, and a giant Chameleon
slide. Art is Magic gives us the most rigorous account of Deller
and his work to date. Something for everybody.
Women's Human Rights The International and Comparative Law Casebook
Susan Deller Ross "A definitive text on a topic both timely and
timeless, "Women's Human Rights" is an indispensable resource for
all who care about gender and justice in any part of the
world."--Madeleine K. Albright, former Secretary of State "Susan
Deller Ross has provided us with an important addition to existing
human rights law teaching materials with her casebook on women's
human rights. The book brings the complex array of legal,
political, social, and cultural issues involved in protecting
women's human rights front and center for students and teachers of
international law. The case book demonstrates that, because of
their reach and their complexity, women's human rights deserve to
be studied in and of themselves not just as one segment of an
international human rights course. Providing a holistic picture of
the status of women in international law, the casebook offers equal
doses of the legal gains we are making and how far there still is
to go."--"Human Rights Quarterly" According to Susan Deller Ross,
many human rights advocates still do not see women's rights as
human rights. Yet women in many countries suffer from laws,
practices, customs, and cultural and religious norms that consign
them to a deeply inferior status. Advocates might conceive of human
rights as involving torture, extrajudicial killings, or cruel and
degrading treatment--all clearly in violation of international
human rights--and think those issues irrelevant to women. Yet is
female genital mutilation, practiced on millions of young girls and
even infants, not a gross violation of human rights? When a family
decides to murder a daughter in the name of "honor," is that not an
extrajudicial killing? When a husband rapes or savagely beats his
wife, knowing the legal authorities will take no action on her
behalf, is that not cruel and degrading treatment? Susan Deller
Ross is Professor of Law at the Georgetown University Law Center
