Jellyfish Blooms (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Kylie A. Pitt, Cathy H. Lucas Jellyfish Blooms (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Kylie A. Pitt, Cathy H. Lucas
R5,022 Discovery Miles 50 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Jellyfish are one of the most conspicuous animals in our oceans and are renowned for their propensity to form spectacular blooms. The unique features of the biology and ecology of jellyfish that enable them to bloom also make them successful invasive species and, in a few places around the world, jellyfish have become problematic. As man increasingly populates the world s coastlines, interactions between humans and jellyfish are rising, often to the detriment of coastal-based industries such as tourism, fishing and power generation. However we must not lose sight of the fact that jellyfish have been forming blooms in the oceans for at least 500 million years, and are an essential component of normal, healthy ocean ecosystems. Here many of the world s leading jellyfish experts explore the science behind jellyfish blooms. We examine the unique features of jellyfish biology and ecology that cause populations to bloom and bust, and, using case studies, we show why jellyfish are important to coastal and ocean ecosystem function. We outline strategies coastal managers can use to mitigate the effects of blooms on coastal industries thereby enabling humans to coexist with these fascinating creatures. Finally we highlight how jellyfish benefit society; providing us with food and one of the most biomedically-important compounds discovered in the 20th century. "

Indestructible - The Unforgettable Memoir of a Marine Hero at the Battle of Iwo Jima (Paperback): Jack H. Lucas, D. K. Drum Indestructible - The Unforgettable Memoir of a Marine Hero at the Battle of Iwo Jima (Paperback)
Jack H. Lucas, D. K. Drum; Foreword by Bob Dole
R472 Discovery Miles 4 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Medal of Honor recipient Jack H. Lucas's classic memoir of his heroics at the Battle of Iwo Jima-with a foreword by Bob Dole and reissued to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the battle in 2020. On February 20, 1945, the second day of the assault on Iwo Jima-one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific theater in World War II-Private Jack Lucas, who was only seventeen, and three other Marines engaged in a close-proximity firefight with Japanese soldiers. When two enemy grenades landed in their trench, Lucas jumped on one and pulled the other under his body to save the lives of his comrades. Lucas was blown into the air as his body was torn apart by 250 entrance wounds. He was so severely wounded that his team left him for dead. Miraculously, he survived. While on the hospital ship Samaritan, his spirit soared to see the American flag flying atop Mount Suribachi-the same flag immortalized in Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. Lucas endured twenty-one grueling surgeries and carried 200 pieces of shrapnel in his body for the rest of his life. Awarded the Medal of Honor, he became the youngest Marine in U.S. history-and the youngest of all World War II servicemen-to receive the honor. Indestructible tells the remarkable story of an extraordinary American possessed with a fierce determination to serve his country.

The faithfulness of God is something that you have to experience not read about in our lives and when I was young I knew that God was real and some thing's I would not do and things that I wouldn't say because I was always aware of His presence, God spoke to me when I was drowning and from that day until now, His presence is what I desire. Psalms 42:1-5, is one of my favorite Scriptures because as Moses said Lord if I have found favor in your sight, show me your Glory, this is what I desire more than anything. The reason I'm writing this book is to that degree, I want to see the body of Christ functioning as I see in the book of Acts. When I was in this certain denomination 20 years ago I read the book of Acts and something was different and so I begin to seek the Lord more and more to answer this burning in my heart for more, in that Church I didn't see what I was seeing in the Bible and it seem like only a few was really hungry for more.
