Nella Hendriyetty, Iskandar Abdullaev, Chul Ju Kim, Naoyuki Yoshino, Bhajan Grewal, …
R3,865 Discovery Miles 38 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Investment in infrastructure is essential for promoting economic growth, and while countries in Asia have enjoyed higher rates of gross domestic product growth in recent years, the region remains severely deficient in the scale and quality of sustainable infrastructure. Moreover, population growth and climate change continue to put increasing pressure on the need for strategic and farsighted development, calling for policy makers to reevaluate infrastructure governance to ensure sustainable economic growth. Currently, in developing Asia, most investment in infrastructure comes from the public sector. However, with growing fiscal deficits and other budgetary constraints, it is essential to develop alternative sources of investment for infrastructure projects. This presents opportunities to tap into the private sector, which can play an instrumental role in minimizing the funding gap through the development of stronger, more transparent public-private partnerships (PPPs) and incentivizing sustainable infrastructure investment. This book provides a scholarly discussion on the importance of PPPs and approaches to unlock private participation in infrastructure investment based on lessons from across Asia. Among the proposed schemes are government tax incentives, development-based land value capture strategy under PPP land pooling, Viability Gap Funds, Project Development Facilities, and other guarantees. The book aims to assess the impacts and future of sustainable infrastructure investments and examines the role of governments in mobilizing financial resources and new models for unlocking private investment in sustainable infrastructure. This book consists of fifteen original chapters on the experiences of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) and a few other cases for promoting private investment in sustainable infrastructure. The fact that not much has been published previously on this theme makes this book a welcome and timely addition to the much needed knowledge on this subject. The Malay Nobat: A History of Power, Acculturation, and Sovereignty explores the history and meaning of the nobat, a court ensemble that performs in courts in Malaysia and Brunei with roots in the Islamicate world since Abbassid times. Raja Iskandar Bin Raja Halid examines the nobat spread throughout the Muslim empire and its emergence as a symbol of power and sovereignty. The book offers a new perspective of the Islamic history of Southeast Asia through detailed study of early Malay literature and accounts of western travelers. The author argues that the nobat was an important symbol of Muslim power that went through a series of encounters and accommodation. The author analyzes the effect of the nobat's appropriation by colonial powers and of its induction as part of an invented tradition in the process of nation-building a modern Malay state. The author ultimately shows how existing nobat ensembles in Malaysia and Brunei are the last living legacy of the Mulism world.

Trace Elements in Soil - Bioavailability, Flux, and Transfer (Paperback): I.K. Iskandar, Mary B. Kirkham Trace Elements in Soil - Bioavailability, Flux, and Transfer (Paperback)
I.K. Iskandar, Mary B. Kirkham
R1,480 Discovery Miles 14 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Historically, research on the methods and amounts of trace element application to agriculture soils for correcting plant deficiencies has received major attention. More recently, due to industrial development and past disposal activities, trace elements are considered to be important environmental contaminants that affect all components in the atmosphere and in aquatic and terrestrial systems. Prepared by a multi-disciplinary group of scientists, Trace Elements in Soil: Bioavailability, Flux, and Transfer explores and discusses emerging issues in biogeochemistry research. The book emphasizes the role of biological and chemical interactions and discusses the newest research and its application to major environmental problems. It provides a concise compilation of current research and a handy, time-saving reference. With contributions from an international panel of authors, the book focuses on trace element issues in developing countries and environmentally sound techniques such as stabilization and bioremediation. Fundamental yet complex, bioavailability can be relatively simple to parameterize under controlled simulated conditions. This is not always the case under field conditions. To expand our understanding of the fate and transport of trace elements in soils, the methods of assessing trace element bioavailability, flux, and transfer among the different soil components needs to be redefined and developed. Trace Elements in Soil: Bioavailability, Flux, and Transfer is unique in its emphasis on bioavailability and how trace element contamination ultimately effects plants, wildlife, and human population.

Environmental contamination in cold regions poses unique problems. It affects traditionally pristine areas and presents substantial operational difficulties. The extreme temperature range, soils and geology, the unique biological diversity, the freezing and thawing of pollutants, and the impact of human activities make environmental site assessment and remediation a challenging task.
Based on papers presented at an international workshop held in Anchorage, Alaska, Contaminant Hydrology: Cold Regions Modeling provides insight into areas such as:
· Problems of contaminant hydrology
· Strategies for development of cost effective amelioration procedures
· Basic guidelines for conducting groundwater modeling
· Feasibility and computer model studies
Appoximately 50% of the earth's land mass is frozen at some time during the annual cycle. While we know a lot about contaminant fate and transport in cold regions, we must gain a better understanding of the effects of contamination and predicting the effectiveness of remedial actions. Contaminant Hydrology: Cold Regions Modeling provides this knowledge, making it easier to choose cost-efficient and effective methods.

Soils and Groundwater Pollution and Remediation - Asia, Africa, and Oceania (Hardcover): P.M. Huang, I.K. Iskandar Soils and Groundwater Pollution and Remediation - Asia, Africa, and Oceania (Hardcover)
P.M. Huang, I.K. Iskandar
R4,020 Discovery Miles 40 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The increasing population densities of Asia, Africa and Oceania are in conflict with the ecosystem. A growing demand for food and fiber causes agriculture to rely heavily upon chemical fertilization, herbicides and pesticides. Rising industrial output creates higher contamination from cadmium, lead, selenium, and other metals. Soils and Groundwater Remediation explores the toxic levels of metals, radionuclides, inorganics, and anthropogenic organic compounds found in the soils and groundwater of Asia, Africa and Oceania. This 14 chapter book reviews the distribution, transformation, and dynamics of the pollutants. The authors also reflect on the impact of Acid-rain. The contributors to this book are well-known scientists from Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, and Kenya. The authors address their findings to researchers, educators, government regulators, and students. As the title suggests, the book is ultimately concerned with remediation. Huang and Iskandar feel "the potential for restoring ecosystem health ... in these areas is enormous." The contributions of Soils and Groundwater Remediation will bring science closer to achieving that possibility.

Egypt in Flux - Essays on an Unfinished Revolution (Paperback): Adel Iskandar Egypt in Flux - Essays on an Unfinished Revolution (Paperback)
Adel Iskandar
R428 Discovery Miles 4 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

No chapter in Egypt's contemporary history has been more turbulent and unpredictable than the past three years. In a very short period of time, the Arab world's most populous country has seen a transition from rule by an iron-fisted dictatorship to a populist uprising to military omnipotence to Islamist electoral victory to constitutional turmoil to societal polarization. Egypt's iconic revolution has been neither victorious nor defeated. Egypt in Flux is a collection of essays on the political, social, economic, and cultural dimensions of change in the country's ongoing revolutionary current. While written over a span of several years, the essays are timeless in the historical context they provide and their ability to chart the country's trajectory in the period ahead. From the conditions that precipitated the uprising and the eruption of national dissent to the derailing of the revolution, the author reflects on the pressing topics of the day while being mindful of the counterrevolutionary movements and the continuation of the unending uprising. From discussions about the illusion of fair and free elections, social inequities, and labor disparities to examinations of religion, sports, literature, and sexuality, the essays in this valuable and intellectually stimulating volume chart both the broad lines and the nuances of an unfinished revolution.
